Adoption Rules, Guidelines and Fees:

Adoption Process:

  • The first step in the adoption process is filling out an application. You can do this online under the Forms/Applications link. We do not arrange visits to meet dogs without an application. If you'd like to meet a variety of dogs without filling out an application please attend one of our events, listed under the events link.
  • After we receive your application you will be contacted for a brief interview. We want to be sure that the dog you are applying for is a right fit for your family.
  • We will then contact your references, both personal and vet.
  • A Home Visit will be conducted by one of our volunteers. If you live out of our area we will attempt to locate a rescue to help us with the visit.

Adoption Rules:

  • Haven to Home will not adopt our dogs to families who do not have current pets spayed or neutered, unless there is a valid medical reason which your veterinarian can confirm.  Having your pets spayed/neutered indicates to us that you are aware of the tragic pet-overpopulation  and are doing your part to prevent more unwanted animals coming into the world.
  • You must have a home phone number and valid address.
  • If you rent, we will be checking with your landlord to make sure dogs are allowed.
  • No adoptions to grown children living at home without parental consent.
  • You must be 21 years of age or older to adopt an animal.
  • Haven to Home will not adopt a pet to an outside only home. Pets must live inside and be part of the family, outside dogs tend to be neglected.
  • If a dog is old enough she/he will be spayed or neutered by a local veterinarian before they are available to be taken home.  If they are not old enough,  approved applicant must sign a contract stating that they will have the dog spayed/neutered by 5-6 months of  age and provide us with proof when it is done.
  • We reserve the right to refuse any adoption.
Adopting families must agree:
  • To a home visit and adoption fee
  • To obey the county ordinances concerning animals (rabies vaccine, license, etc).
  • To provide proper veterinary care.
  • To provide an ID tag for the dog's collar and return the H2H ID tag.
  • To arrange for proper care if you go away and do not take the animal.
  • To notify H2H if you are no longer able to care for your adopted pet. We will work with you and make every effort to rehome the dog.
  • To notify H2H if the animal becomes lost or stolen.
  • To advertise, check the local dog shelters, etc. if the animal becomes lost. Here is the protocol we use for lost dogs that help find their owners.
  • If necessary, to allow an H2H volunteer to do a follow-up visit to see how things are going and to answer any questions you may have.
Before adopting ask yourself the following:
  • If the pet that I adopt is not spayed/neutered can I afford it?
  • This dog may live to be 15-20 years old. Do I really want to make this possible lifetime commitment?
  • If my pet gets sick or injured can I afford the medical treatment? (In some cases this could be for the duration of my pet's life.)
  • What type of dog would be suitable for me and/or my family? Should I adopt a puppy? If you are considering a puppy please visit This site is very informative and will help you decide if a puppy is right for you and your family.
  • Am I home enough to give this pet the proper attention and training that it needs?
  • What will I do with the dog if we go away on vacation?
  • Can I afford the adoption fee?
  • Can I afford the cost of monthly flea and heartworm preventative?
