Mountain Cur (short coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Young : : Large
Trapper is 16 months old and 73 pounds. We’re told he is Mountain Cur; he is definitely a very sweet hound boy! Trapper came to us when his elderly owner became ill and couldn’t care for him anymore. There, he slept in bed with her and enjoyed running and playing in the fenced in yard. He then lived with a friend of hers who had children and he displayed his sweet gentle disposition with them. He also spent some time living in a home with a cat; he tried engaging the dog-savvy feline in play, but to no avail. Kitty did not want a doggie playmate. Trapper next came to our holding kennel where he became a fast favorite of the volunteer walkers who worked to teach him leash walking skills. He got along well with all the other dogs that came and went there and could entertain himself playing with toys in the play yard. In his foster home, Trapper lives with 2 male pointers and a female pit mix. When he first arrived, the brothers were not too sure, but Trapper was a perfect gentleman and they now all get along well on their bird and squirrel chasing missions in the e-fenced yard. He especially loves his foster sister and they play endlessly together as well as share a food dish. He is house trained. He has also been crate trained, but after some time in the foster home, proved trustworthy enough that he is no longer crated. His foster mom describes him as a lovable goof ball, not super high energy. He enjoys playtime, but he also enjoys cuddling on the couch and watching TV (and yes, he will watch it!). He knows basic obedience commands and has no problems with sharing toys. While he does seem to prefer the female human family members, with time and patience he now comes to his foster dad for a head scratch and a little lap time too. He liked the male kennel volunteer and, overall, seems to prefer men who have a more quiet demeanor. He has drawn confidence from the other dogs in the home and follows their lead. His forever home should provide a canine companion (or two). Trapper takes a little bit of time to warm up in new situations, but once he does he is a loving, affectionate, Velcro dog. In addition to another dog, his forever home would need to continue working with him on leash walking if that is a method of exercise they would be providing. While Haven to Home does NOT require a fenced in yard for the dogs we adopt, Trapper does enjoy yard play time and will need to be kept safe. He has gone through the underground fencing so may do better with a physical fence. If you’re looking for a fun family dog, Trapper could be the dog for you.
