Niko

Hello all,

Just wanted to send an update on Niko. We changed his name to Goji the first night he was home -- it means wolfberry and is another word for gargoyle. He had a rough first night adjusting and was exhausted most of his first full day with us. Our other dog, Jake, wasn't too sure about him at first but now they play ball and occasionally nap together. Goji made himself at home and so far is friendly with each person and animal I introduce him to. He already answers to his new name and understands numerous phrases including: sit, gimme five (shake sounds too much like Jake, haha), wait, and car, to name a few. He sings to us too. He loves his squeaky toys (especially the lion in the last picture) and chasing the tennis ball. Belly rubs are a must -- he is a giant snuggle bug.

We are currently working on better leash manners, but he is learning quickly. We ordered a Canny Collar, which is similar to a gentle leader, to see if it helps as we train him not to pull. We go for two different mile long walks each day and would stay out longer but we noticed he was walking funny. Upon checking his legs, we found at least one popped blister on each foot and some scabs on his front legs. When he is conditioned and healed he'll be my new running buddy. I am really looking forward to it.

He has separation anxiety (who could blame him after being left roadside?) but we are slowly working to help him understand that when we leave we will always come back -- we're up to ten minutes alone without issues (other than a little whine when we leave). Everyone that meets him agrees: how could anyone ever leave this wonderful dog? He is a constant joy and has found his forever home. Thank you for all you have done for Goji and our family.

With infinite appreciation,
Britt, Jer, Jake, and Goji
