PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING

Ruger - a 2.5 yo male chocolate lab has found himself up for adoption.  Ruger is a trained bird dog, and his previous owner indicated that he was a very good hunter; so, bird hunters are encouraged to apply for Ruger.

Ruger also likes to play ball, sleep on the bed, and be around his people.  He appears to love people, especially men.

Despite his training as a hunting dog - Ruger has had very little education otherwise.  Although we were told that he would not tolerate crating,  Ruger has tolerated it very well in his foster home.  He has shown no aggression towards people at all, but he has shown some towards very hyperactive dogs.  Ruger will do best with dogs that are calm, and/or smaller than he is.

Unfortunately, Ruger was adopted as a littermate, and was never able to develop his own confidence and personality.  As behavior started to break down, instead of training or separating the littermates, they were medicated.  His uncontrolled behavior, insecurity and developing fears only worsened with the use of an invisible fence.  Ruger's problematic behavior escalated instead of decreased until they found themselves with no other option but to rehome him.

Ruger is in a foster home where he's doing well, but he is very uneasy around very hyper dogs or dogs that would want to jump on him or play rough.  Ruger likes to play ball and interact with his humans, not other dogs as much so he would do best with no other companion animal or a very calm one that doesn't want to play all that much.  Ruger still needs some training, but a shock collar or an invisible fence is not an option for this guy - positive reinforcement only.  Ruger has been around cats, and he barks and tries to get away from them.  He is not a huge fan, but could be trained to leave a more aloof cat alone.

Ruger is neutered, and otherwise a healthy dog that needs some training and manners and work on learning how not to get overaroused and excited and carried away.  Ruger is not a dog to get as a 'companion' for another dog - but he would make a person a great companion dog, especially if you like to hunt!!
